Monotonic Greek was introduced in the 1970s as a simplification of the writing system. Formerly (polytonic) Greek used a complicated system of diacritics. Monotonic greek reduced this to one accent and the diaeresis.
The Coptic alphabet was used to write ancient Egyptian and survives as a liturgical script used in the Coptic Orthodox Church. The Egyptians basically adopted the greek alphabet and supplemented it with characters from the older Demotic script. The shape of the greek glyphs was often changed, however, in coptic. Coptic may be disunified from greek at some point in the future.
Precomposed diacritics for monotonic greek are included in this script block. Precomposed diacritics for polytonic greek are included in the Extended Greek script block. Decomposed forms of both require characters from the Combining Diacritical Marks block. Both also draw on punctuation from the Basic Latin range.
